Dana Rice
My name is Dana Samone Rice. I am a native of Jackson, MS. where I come from a HUGE family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. I have three sisters (all younger - and as the years go by they love to say that).
I always wanted to be an artist, but somehow chose to major in Chemistry when I went to Jackson State University. What was I thinking? Probably that I'd become a doctor and make a lot of money. Majoring in Chemistry did do a couple of WONDERFUL things for me, I met some of my dearest friends in class and working in Chem labs and through an internship I had to work in Berkeley, CA at a US Dept. of Energy Lab I met my husband, Rev. Damian Rice. I guess I was doing my own brand of Chemistry!
While I was in California I felt the same compelling call to preach the Gospel message that I had felt so many times before. I didn't want to accept that call, but for some reason this time I couldn't escape it. I preached my first sermon in July 1995.
Today Damian and I pastor a church in Doraville, GA called Messiah Life Christian Church. We have two hillarious children, Tre' and Jordan.
My first spoken word piece was Ain't I A Woman by Sojourner Truth. That took me to New Orleans performing in front of about 2000 people when I was only 9 years old. I began writing music in high school while attending the Academic and Performing Arts Complex in Jackson, MS.
On my first CD, Funky Faith I've blended funk music and poetry and come up with a new genre called Funky Faith.
People say my soft sultry voice and "heart hitting", mind penetrating lyrics have earned me the name "Quiet Storm".
I try to use the power of Music and rhythmic Word to speak life in the midst of tragedy, hopelessness, and shame.
I wrote Funky Faith for people who have thought of Jesus Christ as boring and irrlevant to get a glimpse of the REAL JESUS CHRIST as portrayed in the Bible. He was a man who was - A man who was always politically incorrect yet never suffered disconnect from the poor, the outcast or common folk
- One who could be so in your face and yet dispense grace
- Bodaciously outspoken with remarkable oomph
- Hyped up, captivating, and affecting He is, but boring – that He could never be.
I present this project too, for followers of Christ who may have gotten so busy saving the world that the flavor has oozed from their spirits leaving them less than even a dull reflection of the Amazingness of Jesus Christ.
Finally, I present this project to the many Wild, Crazy, Fun-Loving Christians who live out a FUNKY FAITH each and every day.
It is my deepest desire that this Word Spoken To You, will inspire you to
Put Some Funk In Your Faith!
